An
unwavering commitment to preserving and reinstating the original work
of Cathedral architect Thomas Kimball from the early 1900s, and adding
to it harmoniously, was central to the program of restoration and redecoration
completed in time for the Jubilee Year 2000. EverGreene carried out
a design-build project within a tight time frame, with design beginning
in early 1999 and work at the site from June 15 to December 1, while
the Cathedral remained open for services.
Jeff Greene played a leading role in the evolution of the design concept in a dynamic collaborative process with the Cathedral Restoration Committee, Brother William Woeger FSC, and Bahr Vermeer Haecker Architects. Detailed designs and color schemes were developed by EverGreenes specialist in churches, Eugene Nikitin, in conjunction with Mr. Greene. EverGreenes work included: Removal of acoustical tile from the water-damaged ceilings Repair of plasterwork Design and execution of a new decorative painting scheme and bands of ornament inspired by the Mannerist architecture of the exterior and restrained classicism of the interior Design, fabrication and installation of ornamental plaster ribs in the apse and high-relief panels around the nave Design and painting of faux-mosaic panels representing the history of Catholicism in Nebraska, and a mural of the rising sun in the apse Conservation of historical murals from 1952 Cleaning of interior stone and stained glass A case study featured as the cover story in Traditional Building magazine, "Old-World Cathedral for the New Millenium," |
